Wildfire Evacuation Excercise
On 07/16/2026, the City of Portola participated in a wildfire evactuation excercise with various local stakeholders. The purpose was to evaluate interagency coordination and decision-making during a rapidly expanding wildland fire threatening the Nakoma, Iron Horse, and South Portola communities.
Exercise Objectives
- Evaluate Unified Command decision-making.
- Review evacuation warning and evacuation order procedures.
- Evaluate activation of the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office Genesis emergency notification system.
- Discuss traffic management.
- Discuss shelter activation at Portola Elementary School.
- Evaluate planning for possible evacuation of Eastern Plumas Health Care (EPHC).
- Identify strengths and opportunities for improvement.
A tabletop excercise was held along with an after action review of the scenario that covered the response by all agencies involved.
